Conflict styles and conflict resolution basics
About this workshop
Conflict styles are the default ways you and others approach conflict. There are five different styles of directing, competing, compromising, harmonizing, and collaborating. Each style has its strengths and weaknesses. You can learn to recognize and cultivate these different styles in yourself and others.
Learning conflict styles gives us a good base for learning the basics of conflict resolution.
Conflict is really hard and uncomfortable. But it gives us a chance to better understand ourselves and others. When we have conflicts with other people, we learn what upsets us and where we freeze or fight. We learn what is important to other people and build stronger relationships.
Maybe we are tired of having the same responses to conflict. Maybe we have a hard time dealing with other people when they are upset with us. Regardless, we want practical ways to better approach conflict.

Meet the instructor
Theresa is a mediator and content strategist. She has been in consulting for 20+ years and has had a lot of conflicts at work and home.
A few conflicts at work stand out as gems that prompted her to learn more about conflict resolution. In one meeting to discuss a new label for a data field, she was yelled at for not asking for feedback about the data label, even though that meeting was her asking for feedback about the data label.
On another project, someone accused her of saying they had an unsafe workplace and that formal action would need to be taken to address this accusation. The degree of upset and anger was frightening and she had a hard time calming the client down.
Of course there are the other standout moments when her boss threatened to fire her, when another one refused to implement her design, and so on and so on…
At some point, Theresa also felt the desire to help people have better conflicts. There’s a lot of conflict in the world as people are unable to relate to each other. She wanted to fix other people’s conflict problems and quickly learned that self-knowledge is the best approach to conflict.
She is still trying to integrate these into her life! It’s an ongoing project.
